Pumwani Maternity Hospital expansion to cost Sh1.2 billion

Plans are under way to have Pumwani Maternity Hospital expanded at a cost of Sh1.2 billion.

Speaking to The Standard, on behalf of Governor Evans Kidero, Communication Director Beryl Okundi said the county government is currently negotiating with financiers to invest in the project aimed at making the hospital a better facility in service delivery, research and training.

"In the year 2014-2015, we set aside Sh250 million for the hospital's further infrastructural improvement to enable it offer better services in maternal neonatal and child health services," Mr Okundi said.

In the 2013-2014 financial year, Sh17,865,000 was used to revamp and equip the hospital's third theatre. In November 2013, a tender to revamp and equip the hospital's High Dependency Unit was awarded and the Sh62.2 million works have been completed.

Okundi said the county, in partnership with Chase Foundation and DT Dobie purchased two ambulances worth Sh10 million for the hospital.

He said some Sh150million has also been allocated for Mbagathi Hospital's infrastructural improvement and this has led to improved service delivery at the institution.

FACILITY UPGRADE

Okundi said a Sh58 million wing was unveiled more than four months ago at the hospital and the 120 bed maternity facility is already operational.

For Mutuni District Hospital in Dagoreti South, the county budgeted Sh50 million to upgrade the facility to a modern one.

Two modern ambulances were also donated to the hospital in May this year.
