Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union(KMPDU) has requested the police to provide them with security in their planned peaceful procession in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
In a letter dated September 7 to the Officer Commanding Police Division in Kilimani, Nairobi, the union Secretary General Davji Atellah stated that they shall hold a peaceful procession to deliver a petition declaring the state of health care in the country.
“This is to notify that doctors (consultants, medical practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, registrar, interns, and medical students) in Kenya will be holding a peaceful procession on Tuesday, September 12 at 10.00 a.m. to deliver a petition on the state of Healthcare in Kenya,” KMPDU stated.
The planned procession is scheduled to start from Kenyatta National Hospital heading to the Ministry of Health and later submit their petition to the Council of Governors office.
Medical practitioners, pharmacists, and dentists working in the public and private sectors will join the union procession to address their plight in the profession.
“There are unprecedented shortages of doctors and healthcare workers in the hospital amidst unemployment and underemployment crisis in both public and private hospitals,” the union stated.
Their procession comes amidst the union's continuous outcry to the government concerning the severe shortage of medical officers and medical equipment among other issues.
“We have witnessed a steady deterioration in the quality of healthcare services provided, no drugs, no equipment, no reagents, and no functional amenities, leaving the overburdened doctors to certify death,” he added.
KMPDU has called for better working conditions for all practitioners to enhance quality health care services.
“We demand improvements in these conditions to ensure that our healthcare heroes can serve with dedication and pride. We demand the implementation of agreed collective bargaining agreements,” he noted.
The union aims to achieve comprehensive reforms that will revitalize and strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in the county.
