CNN's chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour on Monday, June 14 told viewers that was undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

In what she described as personal news, the 63-year-old journalist who has been away for four weeks broke the news to her viewers before proceeding with the rest of the broadcast.

“Four the four weeks have been a roller-coaster for me like many other women in the world having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer,” she said on a clip shared on her official Twitter handle.

Amanpour said she had a major surgery and was now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for full recovery.

“I have had a successful major surgery to remove it and now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best long-term prognosis,” she added.

The anchor said she went public in the interest of transparency and also to educate people on the need to go for cancer screening for early diagnosis.

“I am telling you this in the interest of transparency but also as a shout-out to early diagnosis and to educate people on the disease.”

The London-based anchor urged women to educate themselves on this disease; to get all the regular screenings and scans one can and to always listen to their bodies.

She, however, hailed her health insurance and the doctors treating her in the United Kingdom.

“I am fortunate I have health insurance through work and incredible doctors who are handling me in the country with the brilliant National Health Service.”
