Hidden tongue infections

By Gladys Halima

Tongue infections are bothersome because they interfere with daily activities like eating, swallowing or speaking. A tongue infection, can be caused by, fungus, bacteria or virus.

An infection due to herpes simplex virus type one is a common occurrence. It is characterised by a white or yellow fluid-filled blister, with a red base, appearing on the surface of the tongue. These sores are known as canker sores or fever blisters. Another type on infection is oral thrush. It results from yeast build up inside the mouth, causing the tongue to turn red with creamy white lesions that can spread to the esophagus.

Sometimes, infections develop after the tongue is injured through minor burns or if you accidentally bite yourself. Infections may also occur after tongue piercings, if the after-care instructions are not followed properly.

A recurrent tongue infection in children signals an underlying health problem like inflammatory bowel disease or vitamin B deficiency.

Home remedies ??

• Gargling with warm, saline water several times a day is highly beneficial. The salt helps to kill the pathogen- causing infections thriving inside the mouth.

• Maintain a good oral hygiene when you are going for tongue piercings. The injury and swelling caused by tongue piercing can be managed by sipping warm water after frequent intervals.

• Most causes of tongue infections can be controlled through practising proper oral hygiene.

• When suffering from a tongue infection, one should eat soft food that is easy to swallow.

• Acidic foods or drinks should be strictly avoided, as they can aggravate the symptoms.

Note: Consult a doctor if you or your child experience repeated tongue infections.
