Botox: The truth about anti-aging treatment

NAIROBI: There is a new fad in Kenya that is hitting people with surprise and excitement. Yes, Botox is now here. Kenyans have been using this form of treatment for anti-aging, migraines and excessive sweating for a few years now. However it has gained popularity in the last two years. There are some rumours that need to be clarified.

Is Botox poisonous? Botox has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and is also registered and approved by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board in Kenya. Like any medicine there are a few side effects that you should discuss with your doctor before starting the procedure. There are over 11 million people in the US who used Botox last year. It is safe when used in the right hands by the right person.

When you stop using Botox does your face look worse? This is a common rumour that I have heard from a lot first time patients. In fact studies have shown that those who use Botox, age less than those people who don’t and there are people even in Kenya that use Botox to prevent aging. Botox makes one feel good about themselves and has been used for treating depression among 20 other medical uses such as squint eyes.

So what areas can you treat with Botox? Botox is used to treat frown lines, forehead lines, to reduce laughter lines, to treat bunny lines on the nose, marionette lines below the lips that make someone look sad and to treat wrinkles on the neck. A typical treatment will last 4-6 months after which it needs to be repeated. The average cost per treatment is around Sh16,000.

How to choose your practitioner? You need someone who has extensive training in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. You need to find out how many procedures they perform in a month and how long they have been doing this for. Someone who is well trained and informed of the latest techniques. Going to practitioners who are not well qualified or don’t perform these treatments as the core of their practice will not yield the best results and chances of error may be higher.
