Easy recipes for meals under Sh.500: Spaghetti and meatballs

If you are looking for meals that are delicious, nutritious and that won’t break the bank, look no more. With just a few ingredients, most of which might already be in your kitchen, you can put together meals that will leave you licking your fingers and asking for more.

This is a surprisingly affordable meal that is a great alternative to rice and ugali.

Ingredients:

1 packet spaghetti – Sh.80

For meatballs

Minced meat – Sh.200

1 large onion, grated – Sh.20

4 cloves garlic, crushed – Sh.20

1 bunch dhania, chopped – Sh.10

2 eggs, beaten – Sh. 24

1 tablespoon wheat flour

1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)

For the sauce:

1 medium onion, chopped – Sh. 10

2 large tomatoes – Sh.40

2 cloves of garlic

1 and 1\2 teaspoons of wheat flour

1 teaspoon Royco

1 tablespoon Tomato paste – Sh. 10

Cooking oil

Salt to taste

Method:

1. In a bowl, place minced meat, grated onion, chopped dhania, garlic, royco, salt, eggs and wheat flour. Mix well. Roll into medium sized balls.

2. In a deep pan, add less than half the pan of oil and heat it. Once hot enough, deep fry the raw meatballs. Once cooked, remove and leave to drain.

3. In another pan/sufuria, heat a bit of oil and fry chopped onions until translucent.

4. Add tomatoes and garlic and leave to cook until the tomatoes are mushy. Stir occasionally to make sure the garlic doesn’t burn or stick to the bottom of the sufuria.

5. Add the royco, tomato paste and wheat flour and leave to cook. Add boiling water, slowly, as you stir until sauce is the desired thickness. Put salt to taste and leave to simmer.

6. Put in the meatballs and allow them to heat up. Don’t let your meatball sauce boil.

7. In a big enough sufuria, add boiling water and salt. Put the spaghetti in the boiling water and leave to cook for about eight minutes (where possible, follow the instructions on the packet). Once cooked, drain the spaghetti and put back in the sufuria and drizzle a little bit of oil and mix.

8. Serve and enjoy your meal.
