Picking the perfect avocado is a skill learned from years of experience.

It's the accumulation of hours and hours of standing in the supermarket prodding the green fruit to find one with the perfect amount of squishiness - not too much, not too little.

But even as avocado experts it can be frustrating to find those we picked so lovingly can go off before we have a chance to enjoy them.

One shopper who was fed up of enduring the heartbreaking experience has found a genius solution to stop them going brown for up to a week.

Looking for a 'greener' way to store avocados that didn't involve using a plastic container, the mum stumbled across a very natural solution using something you probably already have in your fridge.

After slicing an avocado and enjoying one half, she wraps the other half in a lettuce leaf to keep it ripe and delicious.

She shared a photo of her avocado online looking the perfect shade of green, claiming it had been sliced open a week ago, to prove just how efficient the method was.

"I sort of accidentally discovered that I have been throwing away first class food wraps," she wrote on Facebook.

"Lettuce leaves, primarily the outer ones that are a bit harder, make for excellent food wrap. They're designed for that purpose in the first place.

"It was all good for today's breakfast. Incidentally, lettuce leaves even keep bread buns fresh."

The tip was welcome news for thousands of other huge avo fans who found the handy hack after it was liked more than 6,400 times on social media, as reported by the Daily Mail.

One replied: "Oh my god who would have known this? I'll have to try it."

Another wrote: "Wow, this is really awesome."

In another much-needed way to keep avocados fresh, one mum revealed she buys the fruit ripe and cuts it into small slices.

She then lays it out on parchment paper and freezes them, to prevent them stick to one another, before throwing all the pieces in a plastic bag and storing it in the freezer for access ripe avocado portions at any time.
