Technology has made communication easier these days. We are able to talk to people across the world with just one tap and this is truly amazing.

Although technology has brought a lot of advantages, there are still certain areas such as phone addiction which we’re yet to fully address.

It’s common to find even young kids with phones, which means they are at risk of phone addiction.

Nowadays, parents are  giving their kids phones for various reasons and it’s up to them to help with screen time regulation.

If you must buy your child a phone, here are some of the ways you can limit their tech use as a parent.

i. Don’t encourage tech use too early

The first step to avoiding tech addiction is not letting your kids get involved too early. Many parents are used to using phones and tablets to distract their babies when they are upset and this could actually have consequences. As your child develops, they are more likely to expect screen time because it’s already a routine now. This will make it harder for them to stay away from technology, especially phones.

ii. Set strict boundaries

It’s important for parents to limit their children’s tech use by setting rigid rules as far as that is concerned. When they know what is expected of them, they’re able to follow up and understand the consequences of not being obedient. Help them understand that it’s for their own good so that they learn to consume wisely. For example, let them know that they’re supposed to finish their homework before watching TV or that they’re not allowed to use their phones during meal times.

iii. Encourage them to be more active

Parents can’t always dictate what their kids do. A point reaches when they’re older and have to learn to be more responsible on their own. What you can do as a parent is encourage your kids to go out more and take part in outdoor activities like swimming, camping and other interesting activities. This will also help them to develop social skills as they interact with their peers, which is a key part of healthy development.

iv. Download an app to help with screen time

Ironically, more technology can help you manage your child’s tech use. There are so many amazing apps that give daily screen time reports and even some which help you manage your child’s internet use. This is a great solution if you’re constantly travelling and can’t be as hands on with your kids as you want to.

v. Be a role model

To be honest, most of us could use some tech regulation as well. It’s not only children who are at risk because so many adults are glued to the screens whether its phones or television. The best thing to do is manage your own screen time and spend more time connecting with your kids. Spare some time for family trips, game nights and other activities to help you bond in real life. You’ll be able to connect with each other and your kids will appreciate this in the long run.
