Three women are being held by police in Kirinyaga after being apprehended by bystanders after stupefying and robbing a Catholic nun.
The three allegedly rendered the Catholic nun unconscious before fleeing through the streets of Kagio town, according to Kirinyaga County police chief Mathew Mang'ira.
They were, however, apprehended by residents.
The nun had been dropped off by her driver at the market, according to Margaret Wairimu, a potato vendor, whereupon the three women approached her and struck up a conversation.
"The women approached the nun and greeted her; one of the women identified herself as a priest and informed the nun that she had issues and needed solutions.
"After a few minutes of conversation, they convinced her to get into a waiting vehicle in which they drove off and later dropped her at the gate of Kagio church."
Minutes later, the nun's driver came back but couldn't find her. A search was mounted.
The nun, who is in charge of a local primary school at Mutithi ward in Mwea West, was found near the church confused. The three suspects were then arrested.
"One of the boda guys trailed the vehicle to Baricho junction, and when they were confronted, they offered to return the money they had stolen from the nun," Mang'ira said.
The police commander said the suspects had robbed the nun of Sh17, 000.
Shocked priests and nuns from local churches led by Father Jackson Wanjohi thronged Kagio police station where the nun was recording a statement after medication.
"The nun is now well and okay. She has recorded a statement. We thank the members of the public for coming to her aid," he said.
Mang'ira urged anybody who might have been drugged and robbed by the three women to report to the police to help in identifying the criminals so that they can be charged in court.
"We are calling on members of the public to be cautious when they come across such sweet talkers who are out to rob them of money and other valuables."
