Town stunned as it rains baby SPIDERS in what would be described as a 'horror movie' experience

Some residents told how they found small arachnids in their beards and webbing in their hair

A small town has found itself at the centre of what could be the plot of a horror movie after baby spiders rained down from the sky.

Locals in the south Australia town of Goulburn have told how the sun was almost blocked out as tiny arachnids and webbing fell to the ground during a peculiar day.

One resident of the town, Ian Watson, told how the 'rain' was so bad he had tiny spiders nestling in his hair.

Mr Watson said: "The whole place was covered in these little black spiderlings and when I looked up at the sun it was like this tunnel of webs going up for a couple of hundred metres into the sky.

"I'm 10 minutes out of town and you can clearly see hundreds of little spiders floating along with their webs and my home is covered in them.

"You couldn't go out without getting spider webs on you. And I've got a beard as well, so they kept getting in my beard."

While this could be considered alien to people in the UK, it is not uncommon for parts of Australia to experience similar phenomenon.

Spiders are known to migrate to the tops of plants and trees and leap off, using their webs as parachutes.

This migration technique, known as ballooning, is considered by scientist to be the reason why spiders are found on every continent.
