Kenyan musicians shine in continental awards

Kenyan artistes scooped four awards to emerge the most honoured after Nigeria which bagged five accolades during the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain held in Nairobi on Saturday night.

Nameless carried the day, winning three awards among them the coveted Best Male Artiste award with Amani taking home the Best Female Artiste trophy which Wahu won last year.

Even though the other two Kenyan nominees STL and Wahu did not win in their categories, their performances during the night were outstanding.

D’banj from Nigeria was crowned Artiste of the Year beating Nameless, Lira (South Africa), HHP (South Africa), and 2Face (Nigeria) in the Artiste of the Year slot which was one of the hotly contested categories. East Africa in the recent past was hosted by Haiti-born American superstar Wyclef Jean and co-hosted by Senegalese-born American multi-platinum star Aliaune Thiam aka Akon.

The two who were in Kenya for the first time thrilled the enthusiastic crowd with energetic performances, humorous jokes and stunts. At some point, the two even entered a fitness showdown, doing press up workouts, stripping half naked and somersaulting on stage to a thunderous applause from the crowd.

Other winners included popular Nigeria duo P Square (Best Group), M.1 (Nigeria - Best New Act and Best Hip-Hop) Samini (Ghana - Best Performer), 2Face (Nigeria - Best R&B) and HHP (South Africa – Best Video)

Acceptance speech

The Lifetime Achievement award went to the late South African reggae legendary singer Lucky Dube whose son gave a moving acceptance speech before a crowd of over 5000 people who had gathered at the Moi International Sports Centre Gymnasium, for the awards ceremony.
