Why Seventh Wonder could disappear

Living

By Leonard Korir

Mau Forest depletion has adversely affected the spectacular annual wildebeest migration.

Mara Triangle chief warden Samson Lenjirr says the wanton destruction of the complex has interfered with the natural flow of water in the Mara River.

Unlike other years, the wildebeests’ migration this season has not been as spectacular.

Following the destruction of the key water tower, water levels in the Mara River has declined drastically.

A spot check along the river revealed a worrying situation, spelling doom on the phenomenon.

No crocodiles

Thousands of wildebeests now cross the river with a lot of ease since water only reaches their chests. The crocodiles and hippos, which normally make the migration fascinating by attacking the wildebeests, have retreated since they cannot live on bare bedrock.

The Mara Conservancy has, consequently, launched a tree-planting programme in the Mara Game Reserve and its environs.

"We cannot sit back and watch as the Seventh Wonder of the world is being wiped out. We have a responsibility to preserve such heritages for future generations," said the conservancy CEO Brian Heath.
