Although travelling alone can be an incredibly rewarding experience, staying safe and feeling confident requires preparation and awareness. Here are some ways to help you navigate solo travel with ease.

Plan ahead: Familiarise yourself with the area, learning about local customs, dress codes, scams, safety issues and transport. Know where you’ll stay and how to get around and locate hospitals and embassies if you’re travelling abroad. Also, have an emergency contact.

Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Don’t hesitate to walk away from a situation or say ‘no’ firmly. Avoid sharing too much personal information with strangers.

Stay connected: Share your plans with a trusted friend or family member in case you need to be traced. Use apps like Google Maps’ offline mode, Find My Device or Life360 to help you stay on track or be located if needed. Also, buy a local SIM card or an eSIM to access the internet.

Pack smart: Travel light with only a few valuables, such as a power bank, a first aid kit and copies of your passport and ID. Use anti-theft bags and keep your belongings close to you. Keep valuable items close, especially in crowded places.

Use reliable transport: Always use trusted, registered transport apps and avoid unmarked taxis, particularly at night. Avoid travelling alone in unfamiliar areas at night. If you are walking, stick to well-lit, populated routes and never cut through deserted areas.

Blend in: Dress modestly according to local customs and avoid drawing too much attention. Learn some local etiquette and pick up a few words; it shows respect and can be helpful in an emergency.

Network with other travellers: Stay in hostels or guesthouses with public lounges for informal, low-key socialising. Join local group tours for day trips, they’re an ideal way to meet other travellers while staying safe. Always greet new people in public, but don’t exchange accommodation information too early.

Familiarise yourself with emergency resources: Learn the emergency numbers for the country you’re visiting. Find out where your country’s embassy or consulate is located. Keep a list of local emergency services and hospital addresses, as well as backup contacts.
