‘An Apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is a saying that seems to have been forgotten by many. The closest guess would be the prices of apples compared to other fruits.

For instance, if someone felt like eating fruits, they would prefer buying a slice of watermelon or pineapple at sh20 other than buying an apple at sh30.

However, if you are someone who values your health and appreciates your body, the sh10 wouldn’t make a difference.

To start with, an apple fruit is a round or oval edible fruit produced by the apple tree, scientifically known as Malus domestica.

This fruit has a thin outer skin which can vary in colour from shades of green, yellow, and red, depending on the variety. Underneath the skin is a firm and juicy flesh, with a range of flavours from sweet to tart.

As earlier said, there are several varieties of apples starting with the most common red delicious and the granny Smith which has a light green skin. Other types include Fuji, gala, and honey crisp among others.

Apples can be enjoyed raw as a healthy and convenient snack. Their crisp texture and sweet-tart flavour make them a refreshing choice for eating out of hand.

However, there are many ways to consume the said fruit. They can be used to bake pies, tarts, cakes, muffins, and crisps, adding sweetness, moisture, and flavour to baked goods.

Sliced or diced apples make a delicious addition to salads, adding sweetness and crunch. They pair well with ingredients like greens, nuts, cheese, and vinaigrettes.

Apples are commonly used to make cider, a refreshing and flavourful beverage enjoyed both hot and cold. Hard cider, made from fermented apple juice, is also popular.

These fruits house several nutrients that support overall well-being and have numerous health benefits. The nutrients include fibre, vitamins such as vitamin C, and minerals such as potassium.

The fibre and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels, regulating blood pressure, and improving cardiovascular function.

Apples contain antioxidants such as flavonoids and polyphenols, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting overall health.

These among other health benefits are the reason why apple fruits should not be taken for granted.
