Are you filling your body with guilt-free 'reduced fat', 'low calorie' or 'diet' foods only to watch your waistline get bigger? There are several reasons why 'lite' foods are making you fatter:
1. Higher sugar content: Reducing calories or fat in food also reduces flavour. Companies add sugars and chemicals to make the products palatable. The high sugar content stimulates the release of insulin, which in turn facilitates fat storage.
2. More calories: It is not uncommon for low-fat foods to have as many, if not more, calories than their full part counterparts. Fat content reduction is not synonymous with calorie reduction so read labels carefully.
3. Low satiation levels: Eating diet foods leaves you feeling hungry quickly because the lower fats and higher sugars spike your blood sugar, causing you to feel hungry quickly and consume more food as a result.
