There was no Meghan Markle or Prince Harry mentioned in the Queen's annual Christmas address for the second year in a row.

Earlier this year the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sensationally announced they were quitting as senior members of the royal family.

They said they wished to split their time between the UK and the US but the Covid pandemic has kept them in California, where they moved after their exit was secured.

The couple were said to have been offended when they were missing from family photos on the Queen’s desk during her 2019 address.

And this year, the couple, along with scandal-hit Prince Andrew, were missing from the video montage round-up of royal events.

Footage of senior royals, including Prince William and Kate at work during the pandemic, was screened to millions in the traditional speech.

Her Majesty included images from Kate’s Hold Still Covid-19 picture project.

There was also footage from International Nurses Day with Edward and Sophie Wessex, and a focus on the engagements carried out by Prince Charles and Camilla.

Many of these included virtual exchanges as they had taken place during the lockdowns.

The Queen featured herself in several clips — including alongside daughter Princess Anne in a call to the Carers Trust.

In her annual televised speech, the Queen paid tribute to the "kindness of strangers" whose actions have inspired all and, sounding a positive note, said even the "darkest nights" have a promise of a "new dawn".

The Queen spoke about loss and about remembrance

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Christmas card this year shows Meghan, Harry and son Archie in a stylised image sitting in front of a Wendy house, thought to be at their Californian home, with their pet dogs.

The card was sent to the animal welfare charity Mayhew that the duchess supports as patron, which tweeted the image and a thank you for an undisclosed personal donation from the royals.

The image is from a photograph taken by Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, and a tiny Christmas tree in the picture is decorated with ornaments selected by the couple's 19-month-old son.

Meghan's message in the card read: "This year we, as a family, have made donations to several charities with you in mind.

"From a local California organisation that helps families transition out of homelessness, to two of our UK patronages: one that supports animal and community welfare, and the other, a memorial fund for a cherished friend that helps to educate children and fight poverty in Uganda, we have honoured their work on behalf of all of us."
