The cheesiest chat up lines to avoid on dating apps

Yet another dating site has commissioned yet another survey to give us some valuable insights into the world of dating. And guess what, people don't like cheesy chat up lines. Shocking.

A surprisingly slim majority, 52 per cent, would refuse to date someone who used one of these lines. But a depressing 22 per cent said they have attempted to woo a lover using a dismal cliche.

What's not clear from this ever-so-scientific study is how many people have actually been exposed to such lines. The results are that people don't like them, but there's no evidence that anyone is actually using these specific lines.

Anyway, here's the list of sentences you should never utter: How badly did it hurt when you fell from heaven? – 35 per cent Did you just come out of the oven? Because you’re hot! – 25 per cent If I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put u and I together – 25 per cent Hi, I’m Microsoft. Can I crash at yours tonight? – 24 per cent The sky must be missing a few stars tonight, because there’s a sparkle in your eye – 23 per cent Are you a parking meter? Because you’ve got fine written all over you – 21 per cent Aside from being sexy, what do you do for a living? – 20 per cent Do you know CPR? Because you’ve just taken my breath away! – 19 per cent I’m a thief here to steal your heart – 19 per cent Are you related to Jean Claude Van Damme? Because damn, you’re sexy – 18 per cent

Other shocking results returned by the survey include the staggering insight that people like humour in a potential date, with 61 per cent saying that it would help them fall in love.

Only 51 per cent of the 2000 respondents thought that good conversation was important when trying to turn physical attraction into something long term. These are the people who you see playing with phones over dinner dates.

So your takeaway from this, as a single reader, should be to avoid the ghastly lines, have some talking points ready and try to sound smart.

Perhaps you could quote the results of this survey to a potential mate. Be sure to let us know how that goes.
