6 key things to consider when looking for a temporary nanny

Parenting

The schools are finally closed and one of the biggest headaches parents always have is leaving someone, a trusted person that is, with their children as they go off to work. This daunting task can be overwhelming considering you are bringing a stranger into your personal space and entrusting them with your child’s life.

Unfortunately, due to time pressures, you must fill the position urgently and this may lead to a bad decision hence the importance of having a personal checklist the nanny you are considering must pass. To make the process easier and straight forward, here are six things you should consider when looking for one.

Who are they

If possible do a background check and let them produce a good conduct certificate just to be sure. Find out where she hails from and what she has been doing recently to make ends meet. You can also have a relative or friend refer you to someone they know and trust which makes it far much easier. Once decided on a candidate, let them produce an original ID and get a copy. You never know how that can come in handy.

Do they love children

One of the greatest characteristics a nanny must possess is a genuine love for children. Education and experience means nothing when they don’t really like children and you better believe your child will pick that about them.

Nurturing

Is she able to connect with children on a deeper level? This is very crucial because it boils down to how sensitive she is to your child’s individual needs and how far her patience can go. You need a caregiver who is committed and wants to build a safe, loving relationship and offer a stable environment to your children.

Previous childcare experience

Looking after a child for a few hours to help out is not enough. Has she been paid to do this job before? That is the question you should ask. Follow it up with where she worked, how long, why she quit etc. This will help you make an informed decision.

Flexible

Every day is different and comes with its unique challenges. That said, should you run late is she still able to stay behind and watch the child? This is not an ordinary 8 to 5 job and therefore she may be expected to extend some of her time. If she can adapt and adjust without complaining then you have a winner.

Trust your instincts

If deep down your alert radar is going off you better trust your instincts because they are never wrong. If you don’t have a good feeling about someone don’t force it. Regardless of whether she was brought by your own mother or a church elder, do not hire them.
