6 tips on how to cut your hair at home

Hair

Do you dread seeing inches of your hair falling off your head in the hands of an inexperienced salonist? Everyone gets nervous when going to a salon for a trim or hair cut to get a new look. So how about doing it yourself?

Not only will save some cash, but with proper directions you can do a pretty decent job. Whatever the case, cutting your hair at home can be quite a daunting task due to our curl patterns and our individual hair needs.

Here are 6 tips on how to cut your hair at home.

Wet or dry hair

One of the main things you will need to do before cutting your hair at home is deciding whether to do it on wet or dry hair. Both styles have their advantages. If you often wear your hair straight, it is best to cut the hair when it is dry and straight. This is to ensure the hair is cut evenly. On the other hand, cutting your hair when it is wet will make it easier and more manageable to cut as wet natural hair is easier to manipulate and handle.

Cutting equipment

Another critical decision when cutting hair at home, is what scissors to use. Always go for professional hair cutting scissors as they are designed just for the job. They are usually sharp enough and designed to suit all hair types. Using a random pair of scissors may cause more damage than good to your hair.

Twist or braid out

One way to easily cut your hair at home is to first partition it and put it in twists or braid outs. Once you have the twists, take one at a time and cut the ends about ¼ or ½ an inch. This method is especially effective for people with short hair as they can easily get to the hair at the back too.

Blow-dry or flat iron

Another easy and more popular way to cut hair at home is to first blow dry or flat iron your hair. If you have thick or long hair this is the way to go as the ends will be easier to access and your cut will be more even as the hair is pulled out. The heat can be damaging to your hair so make sure to use an effective heat protectant before blow drying or flat ironing your hair.

Maintaining your shears

An important tip is to make sure that you do not use your hair scissors for anything else other than your hair. This will prevent them from becoming blunt which will more than likely cause damage on your edges.

Sectioning

If you are cutting loose hair, make sure to put away the hair you have already trimmed. You can do this by twisting, braiding or pinning away the sections of hair you have already trimmed. This makes sure that you are not over trimming or missing some sections.
