Why you need an accountability buddy

Career Tips

I speak and write a lot about accountability partners. The topic is especially relevant at the beginning of the year when we have goals that we want to measure ourselves by at the same time next year. Alongside accountability partners, another great way of keeping ourselves on track is creating mastermind groups. But as with anything in life, there is an effective and an ineffective way of using teams to measure progress.

What 3 things are you proud of about your personality??

The Format

Mastermind groups are simply accountability groups of, ideally, four. Those are few enough to keep the agenda tight while being large enough to create variety.

They can be in different industries and can be of different genders, but there are some things they must have in common. One of them is the nature of their goals -- if your goals are career-oriented, then it only makes sense to have a group that is looking at furthering their careers and facing the same sort of challenges.

Without this alignment, the interactions will be of less value and might lead to frustration and will, eventually, be ineffective.

The how-to

Once you come together with the person or people who you have chosen for this journey, agree on the terms of engagement. Will you meet in person every week, every fortnight or every month?

Will you make an effort to connect whether it is on phone, or on Skype regardless of your geographical location? Clarity on this is especially important as it will lay the expectations and reduce frustration in interacting.

Most importantly, you have to go through the process of identifying and creating SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) goals.

Commitment

On any given day, there are a thousand things clamoring for our attention -- family, work, our businesses, careers and distractions of every sort. However, what gets focused on gets grown and developed.

Research shows that most people do not hit even a third of their goals, which is the ultimate to make a commitment to the exercise of keeping each other accountable, and to doing what you say you’re going to do
