All you need to know about chesterfield sofa

Your Home

The Chesterfield sofa has been around much longer than us, since the 1700s. It is said that the Earl of Chesterfield had it commissioned in 1700 to be a sofa that gentlemen could sit on up straight without getting their suits wrinkled. Guess what? It is still in style and it doesn’t seem like it will go away any time soon.

The Chesterfield is characterised by intricate tufted button detailing on the seat and back rests; a tight back and arms as high as the back.

The back of a Chesterfield also curves outwards giving it a unique shape. However, if your home has narrow passages and doors, check this type of sofa off your wish list because its arm size tends to be quite generous.

Colours

The Chesterfield was initially a masculine sofa destined for dark meeting rooms, stately living rooms, man caves and libraries. However it’s manly origins should not scare you from purchasing this work of art. Originally it was all leather. Leather is a perfect choice for a Chesterfield but we all know the availability of genuine leather is almost zero in our part of the world.

The modern-day Chesterfield can be made in any fabric as well as colours. Popping colours such as red, green, yellow, blue even white create statement Chesterfields. If you are working with a softer theme, a Chesterfield would be a perfect staple to base the design of your room on.

Modern style

If you are more into modern and contemporary design, the rounded arms of a Chesterfield will not fit your theme. Not to worry, furniture designers have come up with Chesterfields with square backs and flat edges. These options give you the deep-buttoned feel of a traditional Chesterfield without the traditional round arms and back.

Seating

Originally, it was made as a single sofa to seat three people. However, for practicality, we are seeing more homes with entire sets made in the Chesterfield style. You can also opt for a sectional seat made in this style.

Cleaning and maintenance

How you clean your Chesterfield will depend on the type of fabric you choose to make it from. For genuine leather, wiping it off with a damp cloth works well. Also, make sure to moisten the leather from time to time. If you choose other woven types of fabric, you might have to call in professional cleaners because of the nooks and crannies from the tufted buttons.

Accent chairs

There are a couple of accent chairs that work well with a Chesterfield sofa and type you choose will depend on the theme you are working with because a Chesterfield can work in any design theme.
