My girlfriend and I are both in our early 20s and not long out of university.
Like most people my age, I’m skint and paying off my student debts. My girlfriend, on the other hand, comes from a rich family and doesn’t have the same worries.
Most of the time it’s not an issue, but she wants us to go on holiday to the Caribbean in the new year with a group of her friends and I just can’t afford it. She’s not going to like it if I say I can’t make it.
I’m worried I’m not going to be able to keep up with her privileged lifestyle. But apart from the money issue, we do get on really well and we love each other. Have you got any suggestions?
Yes, tell her how you feel! Be honest and don’t get yourself into debt just to please her. The fact is, she can afford it, which is brilliant for her, but you can’t.
Maybe you can reach a compromise – she can go to the Caribbean with her friends and you can save up for another holiday later in the year for just the two of you.
And it doesn’t have to be the Caribbean – when you’re young and madly in love, you can have a romantic break in a caravan.
And if she has pots of money and offers to pay for you, don’t be too proud to turn down the offer. You don’t have to take her up on it every time.
Also, in life, things shift and, if you stay together, there will probably come a point in the relationship where you will be the main breadwinner.
