7 ways to protect your skin

Skin Care

The holidays are here with us, which usually means more time outdoors, more food, and more alcohol.

Here are some tips on how to keep your skin at its best.

1. Wash off the chlorine

For many of us, this may be the only time that we spend in the pool during the year. If you have children, you likely understand how a few minutes in the pool can turn into hours.

After swimming, rather than lying on a sun-bed and allowing the chlorine to dry on your body, rinse it off immediately. Apply a moisturising lotion and sunscreen to keep your skin hydrated and protected.

2. Drink more water

When you’re well hydrated, your skin appears brighter and more youthful. Being out in the sun and drinking alcohol increases your body’s need for water. Alcohol causes the body to excrete excess fluids which may lead to dehydration. Therefore try to drink at least two glasses of water for every alcoholic drink. When you wake up, start the day with at least half a litre of water on an empty stomach. Water helps to hydrate both the skin and remove toxins, thereby improving your complexion.

3. Get enough sleep

Getting at least eight hours sleep will leave your skin looking refreshed and youthful. Poor sleep increases your levels of stress hormones which may aggravate skin conditions such as acne. In the long run, too little sleep accelerates aging.

4. Do not sleep with make-up

Sleeping with makeup interferes with the natural healing and repair of your skin. It also clogs your pores thereby leading to dull skin and increasing the likelihood of breakouts.

5. Eating too much sodium

Too much sodium can suck the moisture from your skin leaving it dry and ashy. If you suffer from frequent breakouts, limit your intake of seafood to once a month. Balance your sodium intake by eating lots of vegetables.

6. Avoid long hot showers

A hot shower feels really good, however, it can strip your skin of moisture and may even lower your immunity. In warm weather, take care of your skin by taking cooler showers. Cold showers also have some health benefits.

7. Too much air conditioning

Long hours spent in air conditioned environments causes your skin to lose moisture. You can counteract the effects of the air conditioner by drinking plenty of water and keeping your skin well moisturised.

When on holiday, allow your skin to breathe by not wearing makeup as much as possible. Enjoy your holidays!
