I thought he wanted to talk about her and get my advice on winning her back but we ended up getting quite drunk and slept together

Dear Coleen

My best friend split up with her boyfriend about six months ago. They had broken up many times in the past, but always got back together. This time, though, it seemed serious.

She came to my house many times for a shoulder to cry on and I listened and offered sympathy.

The thing is, I always liked her boyfriend and, to be honest, my friend is pretty high maintenance, so I can see why he found her hard to live with.

When her ex called me up and asked to meet for a drink, I thought he wanted to talk about her and get my advice on winning her back. But we ended up getting quite drunk and the inevitable happened – we slept together.

It only happened once and we both agreed that although it was nice, it would be best not to do it again.

Since then – yes, you guessed it – my mate and her boyfriend have reunited and are presenting a blissfully happy face to the world. It’s like none of this ever happened!

And she’s now expecting all of us to forget about all the horrible things she said about her boyfriend. What’s worse, she keeps inviting me along to things with her boyfriend, but she has no idea we slept together. If I tell her the truth, it’ll probably end our friendship and their relationship too.

I can’t face being around them with this guilty secret, though. I’m worried she’ll pick up on something or one of us will give the game away. Help!

Coleen says

OK, it was obviously a bad move to sleep with your best friend’s ex, but technically neither of you did anything wrong. You were both single – and drunk!

I agree, though, I don’t think your friend will just let it go – she’ll definitely dump one of you and the chances are it’ll be you.

If you and her boyfriend are the only ones who know, then it’s unlikely she’ll find out unless you get drunk and blurt it out. I understand you feel guilty and that seeing both of them together is awkward.

While they’re rebuilding their relationship, take a step back. Perhaps meet her for a drink or lunch, but avoid the three of you meeting up.

They seem to have an up and down relationship which probably won’t last, so you won’t have to worry about feeling awkward for much longer!
