Simple rules for gorgeous feet

Living

Our feet support us every single day, yet they are often under-cared for. As the weather gets warmer, your feet are begging to be released from the usual closed shoes to open shoes that allow them to breathe. However, some of us hide our feet in shame due to some embarrassing challenges such as moisture and unpleasant smells.

Here are easy tips for keeping foot odour at bay:

1. Wash your feet every day:  This should go without saying. After washing, ensure you dry your feet completely, then moisturise them to keep them at their best.

2. Store your shoes properly: Keep your shoes in an open location that allows air to circulate around them. Bacteria need moisture to survive, therefore, by storing your shoes where they can dry out, you’ll be eliminating the damp environment which contribute to smelly shoes and feet.

3. Rotate your footwear: Even if you have one pair that you favour, try not to wear them every day.Rotate your footwear regularly so each pair can breathe, and dry out. You’ll also appear more fashionable by varying your look, instead of relying on the same pair of shoes.

4. Trim your toenails: If you can see your toenails, you should trim them. Unless you have regular pedicures, long toenails are rarely attractive. Trim your toenails straight across and file the edges with an emery board or nail file.

5. Soak your feet: If you have a challenge with odour, soak your feet for 15 minutes a few times a week. Immerse your feet in a basin or bathtub of warm water mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil, two tablespoons of baking soda and a handful of Epsom salts. This mixture will leave your feet feeling fresh, relaxed and nicely scented. After soaking, clean the basin, or tub with diluted bleach.

6. Wear socks: When wearing closed shoes, always wear socks. Without socks, the moisture from perspiration gets trapped in the shoes insole creating an odor that can be very hard to eradicate .
