Do's and dont's for healthy mane

Living

Women spend so much time looking at their hair, touching and taking care of it. For the love of their hair, they choose the best shampoo and conditioner, blow dry and style it well, colour it and straighten it as suits their tastes.

Often though, some people don’t keep a good hair routine choosing to focus more on their skin.

How then do you keep your mane healthy?

Eat healthy:  Hair, like other parts of the body, is an ever-growing tissue and our physical being affects it. One should thus eat well by including enough iron and protein in their diet. Learn to manage stress as this also triggers hair loss.

Swimming: Always protect your hair when swimming. Salty water or chlorine found in water, can wreak havoc on hair, causing it to dry out and have split ends; it also strips hair of colour.  It is recommended that you apply a strong leave-in conditioner to damp your hair before hitting the water.

Hot weather: Sunburn damages the skin and so does it the hair.

Repeated exposure to the sun leaves the hair damaged and dry. It also fades off the dye on your hair if you have any. If you have to stay in the sun for long, cover your hair. Use moisturising shampoos and conditioners that protect against the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn.

Headband

Ponytail: These are convenient and beautiful, but ensure they are not so tight. They tend to pull on your scalp leading to hair loss. If you are unable to tie your pony loosely, opt for a headband instead; but if you insist on ponytail, alternate the way you put it up — tie it low one day, high another, to the side the next — to avoid always stressing the same strands.

Mask

Scalp:  The scalp is the bedrock for your hair follicles but most of us ignore it. Apply a scalp mask on a weekly basis to exfoliate and moisturise it. These masks have ingredients like aloe vera, and they minimise flaking while soothing the scalp.

Ingredients:  Whenever you buy shampoo and conditioner, ensure you look at what ingredients they have. Products that contain more than two detergents like sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, or ammonium lauryl sulphate, could strip your hair. Organic products made with natural plant ingredients are better.
