When dental x-ray is required

Living

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that can penetrate the body to form an image on film. Dental X-rays are essential in dental treatment.

There are several reasons why your dentist may require a dental x-ray.

During routine check-up to detect early cavities developing between the teeth.

In tooth decay to show the size and depth of cavity and determine type of filling.

In root canal treatment to access the length of the root and state of the root filling after treatment.

In gum diseases to assess extend of bone loss if any.

Before surgical removal of badly grown teeth as they show the position of the roots and proximity to vital structures such as the nerves.

Before teeth alignment to assess the state of the roots and bone around them.

After jaw or teeth fracture due to trauma, to determine the position of the fracture, parts of the jaw and tooth involved as well as the type of treatment required.

Whenever there is a sign of an abnormal growth, an x-ray will show the location, size, teeth affected, bone loss among others as well as determine the diagnosis and treatment plan.

In children who have milk teeth to check for the location of permanent teeth growing in the jaw.

Before implants and denture fabrication to assess the nature of the bone.

Risks

There is very low radiation exposure in dental x-rays. However, a lead apron must be used to cover the body and the neck to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure.
