Six ways to remove odour from the fridge

A dirty smelly fridge is enough to put anyone off. You will automatically assume that the food in there isn’t fit for consumption even when nothing has expired in real sense. You probably won’t even feel comfortable eating anything when you remember that stench that came from the fridge.

It’s an embarrassing problem that you might have experienced but it can go away with just a few simple steps. Here’s how

Store food properly

Perhaps you’re wondering why your fridge has a smell when you recently just cleaned it. Lack of proper storage is one of the main reasons you might be experiencing this problem. The trick is to store food properly in airtight containers.

Smells from different foods can mix while in the fridge and the result isn’t that pleasing. You should never skip this step especially when storing meats and leftovers.

This will also keep you safe from any illnesses caused by bacteria that could spread due to poor storage.

Be keen on expiry dates

Food that has passed its expiry date is bound to stink up your fridge. The cool environment helps to preserve food but when it’s reached its expiry date, even the fridge can’t do anything to help.

Do regular checks and let go of anything that’s starting to smell.

Lemon juice

Lemon has a fresh aroma and some great antibacterial properties. They can easily deodorize your fridge and other appliances like the microwave or oven.

Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on your cleaning rug and wipe down the interior of your fridge.

For long lasting freshness, cut a few lemon slices and place them at the back of the shelves. Replace them every now and then.

Baking soda

Baking soda is used for so many kitchen hacks. When cleaning your fridge mix a good amount in a bowl of water and wipe down the interior  ensuring you get all the corners and in between the trays.

If you have tough food stains, pour some of the baking soda directly on the stain and scrub it off with a soft damp sponge.

For a more long term solution, you can put some baking powder in small bowl then place it at the back of the fridge. It will absorb the odor well and keep nasty smells away.

Use good old soap and water

You might not even need any special procedure to clean your fridge. Regular dish soap and water is enough to get rid of the grime and the stubborn odors.

Mix some dish soap in a bowl of warm water and use that to wipe down all areas. Clean at least once every week and you’ll never have to deal with those problems again.

Clean out the drip tray

Fridges usually come with trays at the back where the condensed water collects. When the tray is left uncleaned for a long time, it can start to smell and even gather a lot of mold and bacteria. Some fridges usually come with detachable trays and some don’t.

If it’s not detachable you can still find a way to wipe it down. First, disconnect the fridge from the power supply. This is important because you risk electrocution when you’re not careful.

Once you’ve disconnected, carefully turn the fridge around and check if the tray is detachable but don’t force it out if it’s not possible. If you’re able to wipe it down, just use some water and baking soda and be careful not to damage anything.

If you’re lucky enough to have a detachable one, just remove and clean it with dish soap and water.
