Police warn of lone Nairobi highway gunman

NAIROBI: There is a lone gunman terrorising motorists along Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road in Nairobi, police have warned.

The thug, who mostly strikes at night, has been linked to at least 10 attacks on the two roads.

The latest happened on Wednesday night when he shot and injured a businessman in traffic jam before robbing him of Sh40,000, mobile phones and other valuables.

The businessman was driving home with his son and were held in a traffic jam near South C when the gunman struck. Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the gunman demanded that the motorist opens the door for him.

"When the motorist declined to comply with the orders, he shattered the screen and shot him in the shoulder before he forced himself into the car and robbed the occupants of money and other valuables," Mr Koome said.

"Let motorists always consider the situation whenever they are attacked and cooperate or speed off. It depends on individual cases but cooperation is always good."

Meanwhile, an AK47 rifle recovered from three slain gangsters in Ngara on Wednesday was stolen from police last year, detectives have revealed.

Also recovered was a police communication gadget, a cheque book and two mobile phones.

Head of Special Crimes Prevention Unit Noah Katumo said they had information that the gang planned a robbery along Park Road.

"As the officers approached the area, they heard screams from a woman who had been robbed as the gang rushed to their car where they were felled," said Mr Katumo.
