Kenya is scheduled to receive about 400, 000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and 1.7million doses of Moderna vaccine on Monday, August 23, in what the Ministry of Health says is an effort to solve vaccine shortage concerns in the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 17, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the country will also be receiving a cold storage equipment donation from Japan and American Firm, UPS.
“I am aware that there have been concerns about the unavailability of vaccines at our various vaccination sites. Some have interpreted this to mean there is hesitancy in vaccine uptake. Where supplies have been better, we have witnessed more demand,” Kagwe’s statement read in part.
Kagwe adds there will be another shipment of 1.8 million Pfizer vaccines arriving in the country from the United States of America by mid-September 2021.
“Later in the month, we expect to receive another consignment of approximately 400,000 doses from Canada and another consignment of Pfizer vaccines from the USA in Mid- September,” the CS noted.
He went on, “In view of these developments, the vaccine access challenges that we have been experiencing will no longer be an issue as we shall be distributing Covid-19 vaccines to all parts of the country,”
On Tuesday, August 17 night, (at 10 pm) Kenya received 400,000 doses of AstraZeneca Vaccine from the United Kingdom Government.
The consignment was received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Acting Director-General for Health Dr Patrick Amoth and representatives of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Ministry reports that 2.1million doses of AstraZeneca have been administered with at least 750, 000 people who were fully vaccinated.
The ministry targets to have at least 10million Kenyans vaccinated by the end of 2021 and at least a 26million vaccinated by June 2022, before the country heads for polls.
Kenya has a population of 50million.
