558 test positive for Covid-19 in Kenya in the last 24 hours

Health & Science

Some 558 people have tested positive for Covid-19 from a sample size of 6,357 tested in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate is now 8.8 per cent.

From the cases 529 are Kenyans while 29 are foreigners. Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has said 293 were men and 265 women. The youngest is an eight-month-old baby while the oldest is 91 years. Kenya’s total confirmed positive cases are now 184,161 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,959,701.

Reganrding county distribution, Nairobi had 137, Mombasa 57, Siaya 53, Kisii 50, Kilifi 35, Uasin Gishu 32, Busia 27, Nakuru 23 and Kisumu 23.

Others are Vihiga 17, Kakamega 13, Kiambu 12, Kericho 10, Kwale 9, Murang’a 7, Taita Taveta 6, Kitui 5, Homa Bay 5, Migori 5, Laikipia 4, Narok 4, Bomet 3 and Kajiado 3, among others.

Today 296 patients recovered from the disease, 229 from the home-based and isolation care programme while 67 are from various health facilities countrywide.

Total recoveries now stand at 125,684 out of who 90,998 are from the home-based care and isolation programme, while 34,686 are from various health facilities.

Thirteen patients have succumbed to the disease, the statement said, pushing the cumulative fatalities to 3,634.

“A total of 1,114 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 6,644 patients are under home-based isolation and care programme,” Kagwe said.

Some 113 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 34 of whom are on ventillatory support and 51 on supplemental oxygen.

Kagwe said as of today, 1,378,585 vaccines have so far been administered across the country.

“Of these, the total first doses are 1,008,120 while second doses are 370,465. The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 36.7 per cent, with the majority being men 55 per cent, while women are at 45 per cent.”

The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 1.42 per cent.

This comes as Siaya county is recording an increased number of coronavirus cases and deaths amid an alarming shortage of medical oxygen and isolation beds. The brutal fourth wave of the disease has overwhelmed the county’s under-funded and fragile healthcare system.

Statistics at the county department of health shows the county is losing at least one patient to Covid-19 daily. Currently, 300 patients are under home-based care while its 310-bed isolation ward is full to capacity.

County chief officer for health, Eunice Fwayo, confirmed that the surge had been witnessed in the last six weeks mainly because of community transmission.

She said majority of those infected were aged between 29 and 39, and that those succumbing to the disease were mostly aged 58 years or above.
