Kenya has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries after 175 patients were discharged from various health facilities in the last 24 hours.
Health CAS Rashid Aman (pictured) on Wednesday applauded the health workers who have been on the forefront in the fight against the disease that has now infected 3,094 people in Kenya as of June 10. This was after 105 more people tested positive for the virus from a sample size of 2,273.
So far the Ministry has tested a total of 102,696 samples since the outbreak.
Of the new cases, 96 are Kenyans while the remaining nine are foreigners from different countries, all aged between two and 77 years.
Dr Aman also announced that one person had succumbed to the disease raising the total number of fatalities in the country to 89.
In the latest figures; Nairobi had 43 cases, Busia (18), Mombasa (11), Turkana (7), Migori (6), Kiambu (5), Kwale (5), Kilifi (3), Machakos (3), Taita Taveta (3), Kisumu (2), Garissa (1), Uasin Gishu (1), Siaya (1), Kajiado (1) and Garissa (1).
With the increasing number in Covid-19 cases the government was now looking at home-based care for the patients who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, they account for 78 per cent of the active cases, according to Dr Aman.
“Due to our rising numbers of Covid-19 cases, it is increasingly becoming untenable to isolate all patients in our facilities for management and care. We are glad to inform you that today we are launching our Home-based Isolation and Care guidelines for coronavirus patients,” Dr Aman said.
Aman revealed that Kenya was among the first African countries that are considering home-based care.
Due to the fragile health systems in developing countries, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had advocated for home-based care for Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms as long as the caregivers follow the directions of their local health authority.
He advised that the patient should stay in a well-ventilated single room with open windows and an open door. They should avoid using shared spaces wherever possible, and bathrooms and kitchens should be well ventilated.
