Lake Turkana Wind Power project gets global award

Kenya: The over Sh70 billion Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project has received the African Renewables Deal of the Year 2014 at the IJGlobal Awards 2014 Europe & Africa in London.

IJGlobal- an Infrastructure Journal and Project Finance Magazine is an online intelligence service that tracks global market activity to deliver real-time insight.

The recognition of the project comes after it was also named the African Renewables Deal of the Year 2014 by Project Finance International earlier this month. The IJGlobal Europe & Africa Awards celebrates the best in class deals in energy and infrastructure over the past year.

The ceremony recognises excellence, achievement and innovation in energy and infrastructure finance. Broadcaster and comedian Marcus Brigstocke, IJGlobal editor Sarah Tame, and IJGlobal deputy editor Jon Whiteaker hosted the ceremony. The awards recognise market-leading transactions in their sectors and the leading firms and institutions in the market.

“This project is a very significant project for Kenya, with its huge associated transmission infrastructure likely to be used to connect future projects to the grid,” said Tame while announcing LTWP as the winner.

Chairman of the Board at LTWP said, “We are truly delighted to receive this award. It is not only a great honor for LTWP but for Kenya as a whole.”

The Lake Turkana Wind Power project will provide 310 MW of reliable, low-cost, onshore wind power to the Republic of Kenya’s national grid, which is equivalent to approximately 20 per cent of the current installed electricity generating capacity.

The project will comprise 365 wind turbines (each with a capacity of 850 kW), associated overhead electric grid collection system and a high voltage sub-station
