What really matters in life?

Hi Chris,

I often wonder what’s important in life. Right now I’m young and life’s going well, but I’m scared that later on I will wish that I had done things differently, and made other decisions or choices. But how can anyone tell what matters?

Choices

Hi, Choices!

That’s not an easy question to answer. But one good way is to ask the oldest person in your family. Because they usually know!

They will tell you they wish they’d been brave enough to follow their dreams. That it’s not the mistakes you make that you’ll regret, but the things you didn’t try. So go for your dreams, and don’t keep putting things off until it’s too late.

They will tell you you are not spending enough time with your family. They will tell you that all your possessions will mean nothing in the end. What matters are the people who love you?

They will tell you to have children, including adopting if you can’t have any yourself. Because if you never have children you will have huge regrets about having no one to love in your old age. Or to leave everything to after you are gone.

They will tell you to be braver in love. To talk to that interesting stranger rather than spending the rest of your life wondering what might have been. To say ‘I love you’ more often. To be closer to your spouse and your children.

They will tell you to speak your mind because constructive conflict deepens respect and understanding. Misunderstandings that are not dealt with can destroy relationships and create a lifetime of hostility. So face up to conflicts, and forgive, before it’s too late.

It sounds boring, but they will tell you to start managing your finances so that you have more money for your old age. So that you can have more options, independence and security when that time comes.

So start making some changes now so that you’re not full of regrets in your old age!

All the best,

Chris
