Last year in October, a friend asked me to tag along during their annual pilgrimage to the children’s cancer ward at Kenyatta National Hospital. It is a tradition he and a few of his friends have kept for a couple of years now. They visit the children twice a year whether they have money for buying gifts for the children or not.
I was excited on one hand I would end the year having accomplished one of the things I had always wanted to do but never got the courage of doing it alone. Also, I was a bit scared of coming face to face with the pain and suffering the children most of whom I had been told had been there for months could be going through.
Well, the situation was different from what I had expected when I got there. Save for one of the children whose tiny frame bore the scars of the monster wasting away her young life, the rest were as playful as any other child enjoying good health away from the hospital.
When I walked out the hospital that Saturday afternoon, I looked at life from a different perspective. I may be far from achieving the one thing I decided to be intentional on this year and years to come, but I have learnt to be content and grateful for being alive and in good health.
