How to make tasty, flavored potato crisps at home

Living

Have you ever noticed how tasty homemade food usually is? Even something as simple as fries usually tastes a lot better when compared to store-bought or takeaway fries.

What makes homemade food so great is the fact that we put in extra love when preparing it. You take your time to ensure everything is perfectly done.

During this coronavirus period, many people are learning to make their own snacks at home. It’s the right time to try out new recipes as we wait for this pandemic to end.

One snack you should try make is potato crisps. If you’ve ever wondered how to prepare some delicious, crunchy crisps, here’s a guide on how it’s done.

Tools and ingredients

You’ll need your potatoes, of course. And the best kind to use for crisps is the russet potatoes. Russet potatoes have dark skin and the texture on it is a little rough.

You’ll also notice a few eyes on them. You’ll also need a slicer for the potatoes because they work faster than a standard knife.

Get seasoning of your choice whether it’s paprika, black pepper, garlic or basically any spice of your choice.

Wash, Peel and soak

Wash the potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt residue then peel them. If you prefer to have your crisps with the peel on, that works too.

Once you’re done, use the slicer or knife to slice the potatoes into thin strips. Some slicers are adjustable so you’re able to choose how thin you want them to be.

Prep a bowl of cold water and soak the strips for about five minutes. This will remove the starch in the potatoes and prevent them from burning easily when frying.

If you’re going for that salt and vinegar flavor, rinse them well then mix in a few table spoons of salt and one or two cups of vinegar into a bowl of water for 30 minutes.

If not, rinse them after the cold water soak, mix one or two table spoons of salt into a bowl of water and soak for 15 minutes. This will give the potatoes a nice even flavor and remove the excess starch as well. Give them a final rinse once you’ve soaked them.

In both processes, remove the potatoes from the water and place them on paper towels for the excess water to drain. Spread them out to ensure all the pieces dry properly. Use another paper towel to gently blot the potatoes.

This process will give your potatoes a crunchy texture.

Prepare the oil and fry the pieces

Pre-heat some oil for frying. If you have a cooking thermometer, heat the oil to 360 degrees for the crisps to come out perfectly. Use sunflower oil, vegetable oil or peanut oil for the crisps.

Take your potato slices and put them in the oil a few at a time. It’s important not to put them all at once because they’ll clump together.

As they fry, swirl them around occasionally to prevent them from sticking together. In case you want to add some salt, you can still mix some salt in a small bowl of water and sprinkle it on the crisps as they cook. Be careful not to pour it all at once.

When the crisps start browning they’re fully ready.

Place them on paper towels or lay them on a mesh to remove the excess oil.

Add flavor

This step is optional.

Get some powdered spice to add flavor to your crisps. If you have some dried herbs, ground them first and sprinkle them on the crisps.

Enjoy your tasty, crunchy, crisps.
