Female prisoners at Lang’ata Maximum Women’s Prison are not happy with the manner they are ferried to court.
The women, who are ferried in an old lorry, nicknamed ‘Mariamu,’ claim it is too old and uncomfortable.
A spot check by The Nairobian revealed that the women are forced to jump off from the lorry as they alight and in the process, expose their ‘fundamentos’. “Every time I see the women boarding or alighting from the lorry, I pity them. You can see they struggle to hold their dresses to avoid exposing their nudity. Sometimes the wardens are kind enough to carry stools they can step on as they alight,” an officer told The Nairobian.
The Nairobian learnt that the prison’s sleek bus, nicknamed ‘Moody Hoppa’ developed mechanical problems and has never been repaired.
Lang’ata Women’s Prisons Officer in Charge, Olivia Obell, said: “We have been using the lorry because our bus broke down. It is not good to ferry them in this rusty lorry, but we are planning to repair it in a few month’s time.”
