Accountability a must, governors told

Living

Nairobi; Kenya: Two Jubilee senators have said governors must account for the billions of shillings allocated to the counties.

Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki (Tharaka Nithi) and Chairman of Senate Devolution Committee Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) said governors should stop using courts to shield themselves from appearing before the Senate to answer audit queries.

"Accountability is a must for all public officers and when the governors are asked to appear before the Senate, this should not be seen as a ploy to undermine their roles as the county executives," he said.

Prof Kindiki said the Senate has a constitutional oversight role with regard to counties. "We shall not negotiate accountability with governors because service delivery should be a priority," said the Tharaka Nithi senator.

Murkomen said they will be failing in their responsibilities if they don't champion accountability among the county chiefs.

"We have told the governors that they can go to court, call for a referendum or hide in the forest, but they can't run away from the principle of accountability," said Murkomen.

The two spoke at Sitotwo AIC in Keiyo South constituency during a funds-drive.
