We only drink tea in President's camp, says Sonko

"Alcohol destroys you and you should avoid taking it. It does not hurt you if you don't drink," former president the late Daniel Moi once said.

This could the same policy President William Ruto is following, judging from the recent confession by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko, while in the company of top Kenya Kwanza leaders, said that sometime back, whenever they attended functions, it was not strange to take alcohol but nowadays tea is part and parcel of such functions.

"God is great. Yani, nowadays it is tea throughout," Sonko posted while using smileys to describe different types of alcoholic drinks that they used to share in meetings before.

The former governor has never been shy when it comes to booze, including sharing photos in bars and even coming out to support the legalisation of marijuana in 2019.

While handing over four functions to Nairobi Metropolitan Services in 2020, Sonko claimed that he got tipsy at State House.

"I was drunk when I signed the deed of transfer on some functions to the national government at State House. I was served alcohol ahead of the signing ceremony," he claimed.

Sonko's confession does not come as a surprise to many. Recently, Ruto, a teetotaller, recently urged youthful MPs to quit taking alcohol.

"There's one I can call and tell them you either reduce your drinking or stop," Ruto told Kenya Kwanza MPs.
