City Council askaris pounced on a number of Nairobians found urinating in the streets of Nairobi City. During the early morning operation last week, the men were caught unawares passing urine on walls of several building behind Kimathi street. Askaris are accusing these offenders, believed to have come from nearby nightclubs of polluting environment.
"We are not going to allow this to continue as the by law is very clear. Urinating in places that are not designated is not allowed," said one city council askari.
The officer who declined to disclose his name, said the operation to flush out people who urinate in the CBD will go on until order is restored in the city. He added that they had planned for the raid and had some of their officers also go undercover as drunkards.
There has been concern over pollution in the CBD by human remains, especially during weekends and on Monday morning. Much of blame has been heaped on street families, sex traders and drunkards.
"The area around Kencom Bus Stop,GPO and towards Jeevanjee Gardens is notoriously being used by people who don't want to pay for toilets around the city," said a city resident David Oyumbu.
In the new rules and regulations that were enforced in order to keep the city clean last year, blowing of the nose without a handkerchief or tissue paper in Nairobi may attract a fine of between Sh10,000 to Sh500,000.
The same fine or a jail term of between six to 12 months, could apply to those found urinating or spitting in the city streets. The rules and regulations are contained in the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021 that was signed into law.
