When it comes to talking periods, a lot of people like to do it behind closed doors and tags like ‘red friends’, ‘red wedding’, ‘girl flu’ always follow suit.

And obviously when matters concerning periods are discussed under hushed tones, there are bound to be beliefs, myths and misconceptions.

Menstruation is a natural phenomenon that should be embraced and accepted for what it is. Here are some common period myths debunked:

Having period sex is dangerous

On the contrary, while most couples shy away from sex during this period, period sex actually has its own benefits.

For one, your cramps won’t be as painful and the sex will definitely lighten your flow. So if you think period sex is dangerous, think again, there is nothing that will happen to you or your partner.

Although it’s okay to have period sex, it’s still not everyone’s cup of tea but if it is yours, drink away.

You can’t get pregnant on your period

A lot of people use period sex as an excuse to have unprotected sex but be warned that you can actually get pregnant. Remember with periods you can never be too sure with your circle.

Sperms can live up to five days in your body and if you ovulate earlier than expected, you will definitely head to mummy town in the next nine months.

Always wrap things up every time you have sex and remember safe days is not a thing.

Tampons will break your virginity

When it comes to using tampons, a lot of women shy from this in fear of breaking their virginities. However, this is just a myth.

As you grow older, your hymen stretches as well and it creates that space for menstrual blood to flow through.

So if you have been missing out on those swimming lessons for fear of breaking your virginity, go for it. Nothing will happen to you!

Severe period pains are normal

For most of us, when our periods come knocking, we will arm ourselves with pain killers and warm water bottles because it is war time.

However, severe period pains are not normal, other than the expected cramping of the uterine walls that signal the shedding of your walls, severe period pains could also symbolize other pathological issues.

Some of these health issues include endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids or polyps. In case you find your period pains severe than the usual, it would best to see your gynaecologist just to be sure.

Exercising during your period will damage your uterus

This is false! Actually exercising during this period is recommended as it will lighten your flow and make you feel much better.

This is because after a workout session your body releases the endorphin hormone that will leave you in a state of euphoria that you obviously need.
