One of the biggest nights in fashion, the Met Gala took place on Monday, May 1.

The event is held annually to mark the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit, and always brings out A-list stars to the red carpet.

This year's theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, in tribute to the legendary designer who died in 2019.

Time magazine reports: "Lagerfeld was a distinctive talent in the world of fashion. Best known for his work as the creative director at Chanel, over which he presided for three decades, he was also the creative lead at Fendi and his own eponymous line. Lagerfeld was equally famous for being an outsized personality in the industry."

Stars often step out to the Met Gala in highly creative, chic, and eccentric looks, and this year was no different.

Beloved celebrities like Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, Naomi Campbell, Dua Lipa and Doja Cat were in attendance. More stars who showed up for the glamorous event were Priyanka Chopra and Joe Jonas, Cardi B, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Anna Wintour, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian, among other big names.

The fashion of the day has been described as one where black, white, blush and pearls reigned.

"It was a red carpet filled with monochromatic looks - black and white ruled - while we also enjoyed lots of references to the Camellia, plenty of pearls, a touch of tweed and thousands upon thousands of crystal embellishments," Harpers Bazaar reports.

Rihanna showed up to the red carpet fashionably late, accompanied by her boyfriend A$AP Rocky.

She was a vision in an all-white Valentino look featuring a voluminous skirt with a long train.

"On top, she was completely covered in large white flowers, encircling her bodice and head. White, fingerless-gloved hands poked out from the amorphous shape, while her custom, camellia-topped Gianvito Rossi heels emerged from under her skirt as she walked. White sunglasses with large faux lashed protruding off the frames then finished off the ensemble," W Magazine reports.

The Kardashian-Jenner sisters, Kim Kardashian, Kendall and Kylie Jenner graced the carpet dressed to the nines in their own unique tributes to Lagerfeld.

Kim wore a Schiaparelli dress draped in pearls- with a white off-the shoulder cape, while her sister Kylie Jenner wore a red Jean Paul Gaultier dress with a matching blue and red oversized silk robe. Kendall Jenner wore a black, sparkly leotard with caped sleeves and high matching platforms.

E Online reports that the Kardashian-Jenner crew is no stranger to the Met Gala.

"Last year Kim donned the look discussed 'round the world. She admitted to losing 16 lbs in order to fit into the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to former President John F. Kennedy in 1962."

While some celebs paid homage to Lagerfeld in a slightly more subtle way, others, like Doja Cat and Jared Leto stepped out in eccentric looks that were a reference to the German designer's beloved cat Choupette.

BBC Entertainment notes that the famous cat was "as synonymous with Lagerfeld's signature look as his sunglasses and white-haired ponytail."

Doja Cat wore a gown which featured cat ears, polishing up her feline look with prosthetics that gave her more cat-like features.

"Her glittering silver dress was designed by Oscar de la Renta and featured a dramatic ruffled train, which she accessorised with some equally dazzling jewellery."

One had to do a double take on the actor Jared Leto, who walked the red carpet in what was described as "one of the craziest looks" of the Met Gala.

"The Oscar winner turned up literally dressed as a cat. That's it. There really isn't much more we can say. We're lucky he decided to remove his giant cat head while posing for photographs - or we may never have even known it was him," BBC Entertainment reports.

Some looks that made best-dressed lists in multiple fashion reports included supermodel Naomi Campbell in vintage Chanel, actress Lily Collins on Vera Wang, model Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung among others.

"Anok Yai and Prabal Gurung delivered one of our favourite looks on the night, playing with crystals, tulle and the most striking silhouette. She teamed her mini dress with statement sunglasses and sheer elbow-length opera gloves," Harpers Bazaar reports on the stunning American model of South Sudanese heritage.
