Many studies show that a woman's sex drive often peaks in her 30s. Psychologist Monica Oyoo confirms that many women experience a stronger sex drive as they grow older, attributing this to both physiological and mental reasons.
In their 20s, Monica notes, women's hormones are often still rebalancing after the teenage years. For many, this is a period of discovering and experimenting with sex. She explains that during this phase, women tend to be more passive, often letting their partners take full charge in the bedroom.
They may also view sexual satisfaction as primarily about the man, rarely expressing their desires, boundaries, or needs. Younger women, Monica adds, are often preoccupied with worries about their physical appearance and may feel inadequate. Moreover, sexual inexperience can lead to uncertainty and timidity about what to do behind closed doors.
Things begin to shift in their 30s. Hormones start to balance out, which can boost libido, mood and sexual confidence. This newfound confidence, coupled with a higher sex drive, often encourages women to initiate sex more frequently and by this point, they know exactly what pleases them. They also start to appreciate their bodies more, which in turn enhances their sexual experiences.
"A positive relationship with their bodies culminates in them knowing what kind of sex they like and what feels right to them, boosting libido," Monica explains.
Sexual education and life experience also broaden their understanding that sexual pleasure is a shared experience. Their satisfaction matters just as much as their partner's. Monica clarifies that older women often use family planning, allowing them to enjoy sex freely without the worry of pregnancy.
As women approach menopause, their sexual awareness continues to deepen. Their imagination regarding sex can become more vivid when they are older. Monica adds that this is a time when they become more attuned to their bodies, experience vivid fantasies and feel more daring to explore with their partners.
They also become more outspoken, openly sharing their thoughts with their partners about what sexually excites them. With time, they grow more vocal and self-assured, shedding cultural limitations, sexual shame and harmful stereotypes. "They say what's on their mind without shame or guilt and go for what they want," Monica says.
