Breakfast with benefits: How to make your first meal of the day healthier

Food

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is because it’s the first meal you have after for hours while you are asleep. Hence it is advisable to begin your day with a healthy meal.

Admittedly, mornings are complicated. Between figuring what you will wear, routes you’ll use to avoid traffic and the workload awaiting you in the office they can be chaotic. So, it only makes sense for you to grab the easiest and quickest thing you can find in the kitchen. More often than not, breakfast on a weekday comprises a few slices of bread, cereal or a banana. This is consumed in the car in an effort to save on time and beat the morning rush hour traffic.

But a salvation has been found, below are a few tricks  that can help you turn your insanely sweet and carb loaded breakfast healthy. The best part is that they can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge.

1.Replacing traditional cereal with granola or muesli

Granola consists of baked grains, nuts and dried fruit. Muesli consists of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. Both options are packed with fiber, protein and antioxidants that are amazing for your body in the morning. The two can be eaten with natural yogurt as the fruits provide the much needed sugar.

You can store the granola and muesli in mason gars and purchase travel size yogurt cups. You have yourself a healthy breakfast on the go.

2.Replacing the white bread with brown

Brown bread comes in various forms containing different grains and fiber. A popular option is the 7 seeds brown bread. It contains barley, brown rice, corn, millet, oats, rye, and whole wheat. These grains pack a healthy punch and will keep you fuller for longer. You can treat the brown bread just like any other bread that you are familiar with.

3. Out with the butter and margarine, in with the avocado spread

A great option for sprucing up your brown bread toast is by adding an avocado spread. The spread is quite easy to make. Mash a ripe avocado and spread it on your freshly toasted bread. Viola, a healthy and delicious breakfast. Avocado is packed with healthy fats and nutrients.

4. Don’t just fry your eggs, make a muffin out of them

Egg muffins are a cute and new way of enjoying your eggs and veggies all wrapped up in one. As the name suggests, the eggs are cooked in muffin tins and the best part is that they are baked and not fried. There are many variations to the recipe, you can take all the components of a Spanish omelet and instead of placing the mixture in a hot pan, pour in equal amounts into the muffin tin and bake until done. These freeze well, just wrap them individually in some kitchen serviettes and parchment paper and pop them in the freezer. They’ll serve you for a good two weeks.

5. Try drinking tea instead of coffee

For many, coffee is the fuel that propels us throughout the day so the concept of removing it from your breakfast is a bit daunting. But substituting tea for coffee can give you more energy during the day and not leave you on a serious caffeine high. Tea options are in the hundreds and you can purchase flavored tea bags that don’t really require you to add sugar.

Before trying any new food options, it is important to take into consideration allergies. You may not be aware of an allergen until consuming a certain food item. With that said, happy eating.
