Meghan Markle's final royal outfit sent clear message to designer after 'complicated' issue

The image of Meghan Markle's bright green cape blowing in the wind as she walked out of Westminster Abbey, leaving her final ever royal engagement, will stay in fans' minds for years to come.

The powerful look was down to an Emilia Wickstead dress, teamed with a matching hat and shoes - perfect for the Commonwealth Day Service with the rest of the Royal Family.

But Christine Ross, the editor of the Meghan's Mirror blog, believes there was a lot more to the outfit than just a stylish fashion moment.

She thinks Meghan was sending a clear message to designer Wickstead and to people who believe the two women have a "complicated" relationship.

Speaking on the Mirror's royal podcast Pod Save the Queen, she said: "One of the most iconic looks is going to be her green Emilia Wickstead cape dress.

"That cape blowing in the wind as she walked into the church and then walked out of the church, was such an emotional moment for so many people as it was their last formal engagement as royals.

"That green dress will stand out in history books I think."

She goes on to explain the "complicated story" between Meghan and Wickstead, which came from an interview the designer did with a magazine.

Christine says that Wickstead described Meghan's wedding dress as "simple", and taken out of context in other reports left many believing she was criticising the dress.

She said: "It was a pull quote from a larger interview, she really didn't say anything negative.

"People thought Emilia Wickstead had really wronged Meghan, and it turned out that Emilia Wickstead hadn't wrong Meghan, it was a pull quote.

"Maybe a month or so later Meghan actually wore a custom Emilia Wickstead dress, and that situation shows the power of Meghan's fashion choices.

"She was able to say with this fashion choice, Emilia Wickstead and I are great. We're on great terms, that whole thing was a huge misunderstanding and look at the lovely dress she designed for me."

Christine added: "To choose Emilia Wickstead for that design, someone who is iconically British and so iconically royal as well, I think was very, very well thought out.

"I think that vision of Meghan walking back towards the car with the cape blowing in the wind, it can make you quite emotional can't it."

Christine also believes Meghan's first ever royal outfit sent a very clear message about how she planned to approach life in the royal spotlight.

Looking back over Meghan's royal looks, she said: "Her most memorable and most powerful message was surprisingly the one that she wore to the Invictus Games in Toronto when she was just Harry's girlfriend.

"That was such a statement of 'this is who I am, this is who I'm going to be, this is what my style is' because her outfit was quintessentially her own style.

"She wore pieces from designers she's friends with, and really was able to represent those friendships in what she wore.

"And she wore those ripped jeans, a potential future royal in a pair of ripped skinny jeans was just a huge story at the time.

"That look, which was a white skirt and ripped skinny jeans with caramel-coloured flats, really set the tone for who Meghan was going to be moving forward."
