No September pay for teachers as TSC releases October salaries

Books

NAIROBI: The fate of teachers’ September pay now lies in the hands of their county directors, who are required to submit details to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

TSC said teachers who had not received their September salaries yet they were on duty will be paid once their verified details were submitted to the headquarters.

According to TSCs September payroll, over 245,000 teachers will not receive their September salaries. Only 42,973 would be paid most of whom are school heads.

In a statement Friday, the teachers’ employer further confirmed that October salaries had been remitted to the teacher’s banks accounts.

“The banks are expected to process the salaries and credit the same to individual teachers’ accounts,” read the statement from Chief Executive Nancy Macharia.

Macharia said preparation of payroll was finalised by October 23, adding that the teachers could access their payslips through the employer’s site.

The move by TSC has been seen as a bold expression of their adamant position that only teachers who were on duty during the strike will receive their pay.

As Kenyans were commemorating Mashujaa Day, frustrated teachers were outside TSC offices in Upper Hill demanding their September salaries.

However, in an application filed at the Court of Appeal, TSC has argued that Justice Nelson Abuodha of the Employment and Labour Relations Court erred when he issued orders that teachers who were on strike should not be penalised.
