Every day, more women are increasingly becoming health conscious by going natural. Many women are experimenting with ways to create their own natural cosmetic alternatives. Here are a few examples:
Enriching facial moisturisers
Extra virgin coconut oil: Anti-ageing, high in moisturising fatty acids and sun-protection agents.
Beef tallow: (Fat skimmed from bone soup). In the US, many women who follow the ‘primal’ lifestyle of going back to ancestral living swear by applying clarified beef fat on the face. Incidentally, some very good-looking nomadic tribes in Kenya have always carried out this practice.
Raw cocoa butter: Available from sellers who bring it from West Africa, this natural substance is very moisturising and smells absolutely yummy while protecting your skin.
Raw shea butter: The white and yellow varieties are now widely available. Melt it in the microwave or the palm of your hand before applying to slightly damp skin.
Olive oil: This centuries’-old staple works for oily skin as a light daily moisturiser and is suitable for all types of skin as a night cream.
Carrot oil: Hailed as a natural sunscreen.
Natural toners: Neem tea, apple cider vinegar and rose water work for combination skin, oily skin and dry sensitive skin respectively.
Natural facial wash: Bicarbonate of soda is the cheapest, mildest cleansing substance and it always leaves you with baby-soft skin. Just mix with a tiny bit of water and rub in a circular motion.
Coconut oil is an excellent make-up remover. Apply, leave on and then gently wipe off with a warm moist face towel.
Exfoliators: You may use millet, corn flour, maize flour or moringa powder. This was actually a tip from supermodel Ajuma. Mix a little millet flour with some water or oil, rub gently onto your face and rinse gently.
Salt, sugar, olive oil and honey may be used as body scrubs. Combine the exfoliant (sugar or sea salt) with either honey or olive oil and work well into skin. Rinse with warm water and moisturise.
Healthy nails
Use castor oil or Jojoba oil for strong and healthy nails. Rub one of these oils into your nail bed and cuticles before going to sleep at night.
