Tanya Martin: Living unapologetically

A look at her Instagram account, where she appears in sharp, chic suits and elegant gowns, can just as easily prompt deep admiration as much as it can a rush of envy.

But Tanya Martin is unapologetic. "I have prayed for years for peace, it took me so long to be this happy," she said.

Eve sat with her to discover how she balances a multi-hyphen career.

How do you manage to carry all these roles?

Today was planned yesterday. I focus on my to-do lists and planners to manage my time - that way, I know what to do at any point in my day. Of course, I do not always adhere to the schedule all the time. There are many interruptions during the day, but planning certainly helps track my activities.

What was your childhood like?

I was born and brought up in Mumbai, India. I moved to Nairobi 10 years ago, and it is my permanent home for now. I love the vibe and the weather and made amazing lifetime friendships. The vast opportunities here have given me the platform to become myself and make a name for myself.

I always wanted to do something exciting and climb the corporate ladder, and when the opportunity knocked me to soar higher, I grabbed it.

What's the most annoying thing about you?

When I do not get the time I need for myself, when I need my sleep, I need my sleep. Eight hours of it, to be precise. When I do not get that, it shows in my work. But because I know that about myself, I ensure to prioritise rest, which works for me because that is how I efficiently juggle all my various careers.

What about you could use some improvement?

I do a lot of screen time, and I would like to improve on that.

You also run the tantrum tales Podcast?

Yes. The idea was born during the Covid-19 pandemic. Being on lockdown, I wondered what I could do. I decided to do a podcast where I discuss current issues. I engage with multi-talented guests who take the time to talk to me on my show through insightful conversations. I speak on various matters; from millennials, and leadership, to mental health. I completed series one, and I am preparing for the second.

What do the next five years look like for you?

I am planning to have a fashion label of my own. My passion is fashion, and I have an audience for it.

The Kenyan market lacks elegant, affordable, yet comfortable clothing and accessories. Women must dress up and take control of their style because that translates into their confidence. Kenya has an amazing market, and it is all about how it sells/portrays itself out there. Kenyan designers, musicians, and artistes need to focus on quality, detailing and overall packaging.

It is always possible to start again and avoid falling into the pressures of social media. Find your own identity and filter your reality. Finally, change with the changing times, and embrace technology!
