Baby shower cancelled? Four things you can do instead to celebrate mum and baby

With social distancing rules in place, events such as baby showers have been cancelled. While we are all trying to follow the guidelines put in place to help curb the spread of coronavirus, we can still celebrate this special milestone with our friends. A new baby, especially a first baby, is a life-changing event that we all want to remember fondly. And since we can’t go the traditional route and have a normal baby shower, here are alternative ways to mark this milestone.

1. Have a virtual shower

In the same way that we have work meetings via video conferencing, you can host a virtual baby shower. Pick a date and time, or go with the original one, and have all the mum-to-be’s friends ‘attend’. Where possible, arrange with her partner so that the shower can still be a surprise. Some video conferencing sites allow you to customize the site and have a virtual guest book. You can be sure that the mum-to-be will be thrilled to have this important event even though it is virtually.

2. Buy a gift and have it delivered

Just as you would have done for the traditional baby shower, visit online stores and get the mum-to-be a gift and have it delivered to her house. You can buy baby items like clothes, blankets and toys or diapers which are always a welcome gift. Buy the mum-to-be a gift for herself such as aroma-therapy candles, chocolate or even pay her TV subscription.

3. Drive by her home

In keeping with social distancing rules, you can pay your friend a visit without going into her home. Organise with her group of friends for each of you to visit on the same day. Say hello from the parking lot or gate and leave your gifts for her to pick later. You can be sure she will appreciate this loving gesture.

4. Plan a post-lockdown visit

Once the lockdown has been lifted, you can go and visit mum and baby and take them some gifts too. While the pre-baby shower is a very important part of pregnancy and childbirth, the post-baby visit is just as important. During this time many mothers feel isolated as they adjust to life with a newborn and having a few friends coming over to see the new baby and chat up with mama can be a welcome distraction.
