How to be happy: Habits to add to your routine

Happiness isn’t just about making the decision to be happy. There are many challenges in life that can make it hard to cheer up and live your life to the fullest.

The great news is that there are certain changes you can make that can lead you to happiness. Although bad days will still come, these small changes will definitely make a difference and help you enjoy life more.

Below is a list of habits, if you follow, could bring happiness into your life.

  1. Spend less time on your phone

Technology is a blessing and a curse. Yes, I said it! We are able to connect with each other more through different online platforms but somehow, we are less connected than ever in real life. Another thing is that what we see on our phones subconsciously affects how we feel about others and ourselves in general. These days we put more effort into our social media audience and forget the things that really matter. Have an occasional detox from your phone. This will make you happier and give you more time to connect with your environment, and the people around you.

  1. Appreciate the little things in life

The best things in life are free. The air we breathe, the trees that grow and the sun that rises and sets every day. When you pay more attention to the details, you learn that there is so much to discover and appreciate around you. This is a great form of therapy on your road to happiness.

  1. Be a friend to yourself

Generally, we are our worst critics. We criticize ourselves for small mistakes, bash ourselves for not achieving our targets and constantly put ourselves down for not being perfect. These are feelings that can lead to depression and other dangerous emotions. Be kinder to yourself and encourage yourself the way you would encourage a friend or family member.

  1. Reach out to others

Another way of securing happiness is through helping others. When you reach out to others, you’ll find that many people are struggling with similar situations. This will help you appreciate your life more as you realize other people are having it worse than you do. You will discover that charity work is a great way to be more grateful. You will realize that others appreciate what you have to offer and this definitely helps you feel appreciated as well. Reach out to others more and you’ll appreciate how much of a difference it makes.

  1. Challenge yourself more

Constantly being in your comfort zone won’t make you happier. It’s the quickest way to waste your potential because you won’t really discover what you’re capable of. The only way to beat this is by taking risks and pushing your boundaries more. Open that business that you have been thinking of or even pursue that course you’ve been afraid of. Believe in yourself and take chances!

  1. Take vacation days

Many people underestimate the power of taking a break. The focus is always on work, school, children and other important areas that need our attention daily. A vacation is essential as it allows you to relax your mind and keeps you off your daily stresses for those few days. When you eventually get back to your normal routine, you’ll definitely feel more energized and ready to work.
